OUR STORY

Oakwell Farm is a small piece of land situated close to the borders between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Purchased in 2015 with the intention of housing horses and chickens, Oakwell Farm is developing and diversifying into green camping, community involvement, and specialist educational retreats, with the initial campsite phase beginning to welcome campers in 2023.

But it didn't start with lofty ambitions. Our driven and passionate family began with nine acres that was in need of care and rejuvenation. Over the past seven years, we have put many man hours into improving existing structures, creating diverse pasture full of native plants, and restoring all-important hedgerows. As a result, we have seen a boon for biodiversity, with a huge variety of wild things choosing to call Oakwell Farm home.

Our name is derived from the history of the land; being the site for the main well between three small villages, we wanted to honour and remember the service the land has provided to our ancestors over the years. We are the site for a number of mature oak trees, including the oak in the winter paddock which holds it's own Tree Preservation Order. Our hay field in particular shows signs of farming as far back as the middle ages, with rig and furrow being a prominent feature throughout.

All of these factors considered, a green campsite made the most sense in terms of land utilisation, and promotion and preservation of the natural world around us. We hope that through the work we do at Oakwell Farm, many will benefit.

What is Green Camping?

Green Camping is the act of camping in an environmentally responsible manner.

The old adage "leave no trace" is used often in green camping, and you will see this reflected in how we construct and run our campsite. At the end of the season, our camping area returns to it's usual job of providing grazing for our animals, and the focus shifts to preparing the land for winter. You will also notice seemingly strict or unusual boundaries within our campsite rules; these are to protect and benefit the wild things inhabiting the land.

This also means we strive to run Oakwell Farm in an ethical and sustainable way, so that all who benefit from the land do so in balance with all of the systems in play. The animals in our care are treated with respect, and lead enriching lives exploring the farm. Grazing systems are managed carefully for our horses to ensure they are fit and healthy, and where possible, our chickens range freely.

Whilst on site, you will be able to purchase eggs from our rambunctious and curious hens, and we have plans to expand into fruit and veg in the near future. We endeavour to signpost you to small, local businesses for any needs you have whilst staying with us.
